Getting to Barbados
All international airlines arrive at the Grantley Adams International Airport. The airport is located 13km (8 miles) southeast from the capital Bridgetown. The airport code is BGI.
Direct flights to Barbados from the United Kingdom are provided by British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic. Direct flights from the United States are provided by American Airlines, Jet Blue, and US Airways. Direct flights from Canada are provided by Air Canada and WestJet. Intra-regional travel is currently provided by LIAT Airlines and Caribbean Airlines. Other airlines will serve the airport are: American Eagle, BMI, and Condor.
Flight times from London to Barbados are 7 hours 30 minutes, from New York is 5 hours, from Miami 3 hours and from Toronto is 4 hours.
Departure tax is BDS$55 (US$ 27.50), except for passengers in transit who are in in Barbados less than 24 hours and children under the age of 12.
Travelling around Barbados
To get around Barbados from the airport, there are a number of options:
- Airport accredited taxis are located outside the arrival hall. Official taxi’s bear the “Authorised Taxi” logo. Participants should avoid using, un-official taxis as they may not adhere to official fares. Travel to the Hilton Hotel is BDS$40.
- Public transport is also available from the airport to the city. These buses run on an hourly basis, costing BDS$2.
Numerous car rental companies are available on the island, offering a wide range of vehicle choices. As an added courtesy, many of them will deliver your car to the airport or hotel, as well as arrange for you to obtain the mandated local drivers permit.
